Depending upon the type of business that you’re running, the type of traffic your website is receiving is going to be different.
In order to maximize the effectiveness of your online presence, it’s therefore vitally important to understand exactly where your traffic is coming from.
By understanding this, you can identify the kinds of customers and clients you’re attracting, and devise better and more efficient ways of building that customer or client base.
Here is a good starting point:
Some Web Traffic Statistics
A recent article in eMarketer provided some useful statistics about web traffic, which were tallied by BrightEdge, a firm that specializes in search engine optimization.
The most important of its findings is this:
More than 50% of all web traffic is driven by organic search results, a fact which underscores the vital importance of an effective search engine optimization strategy.
This is especially true for websites that offer business services, as the study found that nearly 73% of their traffic was generated through organic search results.
However important organic search results may be though, other sources of web traffic should not be discounted.
For example, web traffic that comes by way of referral accounts for slightly over a third of all web traffic. Paid search and social media rounded about the list, driving 10% and 5% of traffic respectively.
Depending upon the industry, these figures fluctuate, with hospitality and retail businesses garnering significant traffic through paid search results (19% and 22%, respectively).
When one factors in revenue generated off of this traffic, the picture stabilizes a little bit. As before, organic search traffic plays the biggest role in driving revenues for websites that offer business services.
Interestingly enough, however, those websites that are in the media and entertainment industry capture the majority of their revenue through traffic that comes by way of referral.
As far as social media is concerned, its effect on revenues is almost non-existent across all industries, so don’t feel bad if your company sucks at social media.
How to Get the Type of Traffic You Need
When it comes to driving the web traffic that’s right for your business, you can’t take an approach that’s one size fits all.
Instead, you need to develop and implement a strategy that’s narrowly targeted at the primary avenues through which traffic to your website is arriving. These avenues will necessarily change and shift over time, as they are driven by a variety of competitive factors, as well as by buying cycles.
This is why a completely customized plan, one that matches your business specifically, is extremely important.
Of course, given the tremendous influence of organic search traffic, you will necessarily have to implement a comprehensive SEO strategy that will boost your profile on organic search results. Here, it’s important that strategy be narrowly targeted at the kind of visitors you’re looking to capture.
This SEO strategy must necessarily be paired with a comprehensive strategy for dealing with the other avenues of web traffic, including referral-based traffic and paid search.
