One of the real joys of my job is explaining to kids what we do and watching them get it…especially right after meeting with a 50-ish year old business owner who still “takes the paper” and isn’t quite sure about this whole internet thing.
So a few weeks ago, I was explaining what we do to some 10-ish year old boys who love Pokemon when an argument broke out over whether Pikachu was a cat or some other type of creature. And while I don’t pretend to know the first thing about Pokemon, it proved to be a good experiment to illustrate what we do.
Blocking & Tackling on the Internet
I have a friend who likes to refer to business fundamentals as “blocking and tackling” and at it’s core this experiment shows the basics of what we do.
Let’s say these 10 year olds wanted to start on online business related to Pokemon. How would they go about driving traffic to their website?
Here are some good first steps:
- Establish a good understanding of exactly who their target audience is
- Look at potential topics which would be of interest to this target audience
- Plan and write great content geared around these interests in the form of keywords and phrases
- Use smart techniques for search engine optimization so their posts are found in search
- Share that new content on social sites for others to post and share.
You might hope for some search results like those below:
So while my 10 year old entrepreneurs won’t get rich by creating one blog post about what type of animal Pikachu is, if they follow this thought process of creating content specific to the audience they are after, they’ll be on the right track. They’ll start attracting visitors who want to find out about Pokemon and hopefully stimulate some discussion on their website or social media channels.
In short, if they create good content, they stand the best chance of succeeding.
And at it’s core, that’s what we do – help business owners generate the type of content that attracts not only search engines (and bottom line oriented better rankings), but also attracts website visitors who are interested in the topic and want to learn. The important piece is that when they get there, you not only offer them something of value, but also differentiate yourself from the zillions of other websites out there.
